The distance we covered by boat from Mazatlán to La Paz was approx. 288 miles (463 kilometres) and we needed two and a half days for crossing it. Most of the time we were able to sail comfortably with a speed of about five knots (9,26 km/h), few times we needed to start the motor and we made a few miles on fuel. We used different sails (mains'l, stays'l, genoa, spinnaker) depending on the situation and Brian thought Fernando and me everything we needed to survive our crossing.
For me it was not only the first time sailing but also fishing and so it came that I caught my first fish, a bonito, in the Gulf of California. The fish was barbecued in the evening, unfortunately a few minutes too long, yet we all enjoyed it.
We were able to observe spectacular sunrises and sunsets, with no land in sight in any direction. As the boat and the sea in front of us had to be monitored all the time, during the night we divided into three-hour shifts.
During the day some dolphins accompanied us for a short time. Since we were a bit too slow and thus boring for them, these fast speedsters left the field after a few boat inspections.
